‘Know Thyself’ was written over the portal of antiquity. Legend tells that the seven sages of ancient Greece, the founders of western philosophy, gathered together in Delphi and inscribed ‘know thyself’ at the scared oracle at Delphi.
According to another account, Thales Miletus, one of the seven sages, was asked two questions:
"What is the most difficult thing?"
"To know thyself," he answered.
"What is the easiest thing?"
"To give advice," he replied.
